A farm hand by profession he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 17/7/1914 as a Boy 2nd Class. On the outbreak of the Great War he was still undergoing training and his first ship being the HMS Pelorus (cruiser) from 27/2/1915 – 12/12/1915 serving in the Mediterranean. HMS Cormorant (Flag ship Gibraltar dockyard) 13/12/1915 – 31/12/1916.HMS ? 1/1/1917 – 28/2/1917, HMS Vernon (torpedo school), HMS Pembroke. HMS Moresby (destroyer) 18/1/1918 – 28/2/1919. On 15 March she was patrolling with sistership Michael when they surprised U-110 shortly after the submarine had sunk the ocean liner Amazon. The submarine dived but was brought back to the surface when the destroyers attacked with depth charges and was finished by gunfire. Six of the crew were rescued. Edwards received a MID for his part in the incident.Post war he continued to serve until he was medically discharged due to his failing eyesight in 1925. Note there are two WW1 German submarines the U-110 Sunk 15/3/1918. And the UB 110 sunk 19/7/1918. The sinking of the UB 110 is rather controversial with the fate of the German survivors.
