Description: A framed antique print in ready-to=hang condition. Circa 1875-1885. I opened this professionally framed print to see what information was below the matting--prints of Benjamin West's painting of Penn (with Native Americans forming an important, early land treaty) differ A LOT in value based on who produced it and on how old it is. I believe this to be a later 19th century "broadside" version, like some others I've researched online. The Illman Brothers were the engravers of this print, and although some others out for sale are advertised as "1845" or "1857," this apparently isn't the case since the Illman Brothers set up their business in 1860 (if all I've learned today is true). In any case, this is a nice old print of Benjamin West's painting of William Penn depicting a perhaps romanticized version of what things really looked like. The framing is relatively modern (I'm guessing 1950's but am not certain) and was done in Philadelphia at Staton's Gallery. This version of the print has an engraved facsimile of Penn's signature. The Illman information is under the matting, as I've indicated. It is undated. There are some age spots of different types (and I've photographed them as best as I can through the glass). The print is in overall good condition and the frame is in good shape as well--some rough edges and minor paint loss--but the frame was designed to look older than it is, so it all fits together quite well. I'll ship the print very carefully. I'm not interested in trying to overcharge for shipping--if my estimate is higher than what the actual cost turns out to be, I will immediately refund the buyer the difference. Print is approximately 15" X 12" --opening of the matting is less, perhaps about 12 3/4" X 10 1/4". Frame 17" X 12.5" approximate. Thanks for looking. A nice historical piece.
