Description: This is a custom 12" figure commemorating one of the best known poets in literary history, Walter Whitman Jr. (May 31, 1819- March 26, 1892). He was immediately nicknamed Walt to differentiate him from his father. Walt was an American poet, journalist, and essayist. Whitman was one of the most influentcial poets in American history and often called the father of free verse. He was part of the transition between transcendentalism to realism. Through most of his youth, Whitman was unhappy and he felt very restless. Due in part to some bad investments, his family's financial status was pretty low. To help the family finacially, at age 11, Walt would get a job as an office boy for two lawyers. He would later go to work as an apprentice and printer's devil for a local newspaper. Here, Walt would learn about printing and typesetting. It is thought by some that he may have also written some small filler pieces for the newspaper. Whitman would hone his writing skills over the next several years working for different newspapers and magazines. Sometimes he might work in some low level capacity but often he was writing stories and poetry. In early 1850 Whitman started what many feel is his greatest work, Leaves of Grass. Leaves of Grass was a collection of poetry that Whitman continued edititng and revising until he died. Walt Whitman was a very interesting figure in literary history and one of the greatest poets of all time. Please note: while this figure does not look exactly like Walt Whitman, there is a bit of a resemblance.
