Description: Vitex agnus-castus is a shrub/small tree in the Lamiaceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean region. Common names are vitex, chaste tree, chastetree, chasteberry, Abraham's balm, lilac chastetree, or monk's pepper. It is a cross-pollinator but has seen self-pollination done and recorded. The foliage is fragrant and will attract many insects such as Butterflies, bees, and birds. The large spikes of fragrant flowers come out late spring and last until mid-summer. It can grow to 16 feet tall but is usually seen around 10 feet tall. It requires full sun but can tolerate part shade. Well-drained soil is needed for best results. Zones 7-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
