Description: The “Winged Ear” of DeKalb is an iconic logo that was created in the1930s to represent the “lifting of mortgages” for farmers from robustsales of DeKalb’s recently innovated hybrid corn. The new logo was usedin the first advertisement which appeared in the Prairie Farmer magazine October 26, 1936. Not longafter this, in 1938, the first signs appeared in the fields as farmers began to hang the signs on fence posts to advertise that the farm used Dekalb cornseed. This piece is one of the first signsproduced in 1938 and was used on the Klein Farm in Hinckley, Illinois, arecognized Centennial Farm inDeKalb County. As it was a "working" sign, it shows signs of weathering and wear from use. The corngraphics are faded and there are some surface rust spots on the sign and themetal rod is also a bit rusty. There is one bend in the metal at one end of thecorn cob (end furthest from the base). This is a true piece of Americana.Sign is; 18" long x 8.5" tall (at top of wing).
