Description: Victorian Art Glass Basket with mica flakes by Stevens & Williams. Pink and white with Thorn Pattern Handle. Basket 13x14 centimetres or 5x5.5 inches and 18 centimetres or 7.5 inches high. Handle is UV reactive and glow green under Black light It is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks and no stains or mineral deposit inside. Stourbridge Spangle Glass. This Coral design made with mica was developed by John Northwood II and a specialty of his while he worked at Stevens & Williams. Arranging silver mica to form a pattern of coral is not an easy thing to do while working with different hot layers of glass. The vibrant pink colors with the Silver Mica. Pink glass lined with white opal glass. The silver mica design then carefully marvered and then cased in clear crystal was a lot of very exacting work. Then a crystal Thorn handle was applied. The pontil is ground. The shape of the basket is the melon shape. It took a great deal of skill and time to do this which accounts for the rarity of this type of art glass found today.
