Description: Up for auction is a Two Lb. Zip-Lock Bag of Mt. St. Helens Volcanic Ash from The May 18th, 1980 eruption and ash fall in the Yakima Valley, WA. This is not really 'ash' as you would think of it, but rather pulverized stone created by the unimaginable force of Mt. St. Helens blowing its top. My grandpa saved a few buckets of ash after the eruption and during the long cleanup. The ash has a consistency of gritty flour. We had about 1" of ash fall in the Yakima/Wapato area, since we were relatively close to Mt. St. Helens plus the prevailing winds are from the West as we are due East of Mt. St. Helens. If you work with art glass or are a glass blower, this powdery ash might be interesting to work with. The chemical analysis of this ash is: silica dioxide (glass), aluminum oxide, iron oxide, calcium oxide, and potassium oxide. "Geologists claim that approximately 13,000 years ago Mt. St. Helens erupted in a similar fashion. This ash plus ash from other ancient eruptions of Northwest volcanic peaks has resulted in the rich soils that grow the world famous, high quality WA State apples, pears, cherries and other fruits, hops and other crops."I've heard back from customers telling me what they hoped to use their bag of ash for: one dad was helping his son do a history/science project making concrete using an ancient recipe the Romans used with volcanic ash. Most folks just like to feel the the ash. Some are collecting ash from different volcanoes around the world. Someone recently told me that they were going to melt the ash and create Helenite glass. "Helenite" is a trade name used for a man-made glass that is produced using volcanic ash from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. It is sold as facet rough, faceted stones, tumbled stones, and mounted in finished jewelry. The material has been produced in a variety of green, red, and blue hues, which are produced or enhanced by adding coloring agents to the melt. Tourists visiting Mount St. Helens Interpretive Center are the primary market for the novelty colored stone jewelry made with Helenite. Buyer pays $10.40 for Small Flat Rate Priority Box mail.
