Description: Here we have a stunning musical document from the late cellist extraordinaire TOM CORA: Gumption in Limbo, a CD-only German import released in 1991 by the Sound Aspects label. Tom Cora was an astonishing musician who brought something valuable to the table in every project he was involved in. During his tragically brief lifetime, he would play with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Andrea Centazzo, Butch Morris, Wayne Horvitz, David Moss, Toshinori Kondo, Eugene Chadbourne, George Cartwright, Bill Laswell, Zeena Parkins, Don Byron, Catherine Jauniaux, Myra Melford, Marc Ribot and The Ex, among others. Performing live, Cora was like no cellist ever seen; his instrument was prepared, electronically modified and highly amplified. He developed the style of playing sawed chords and percussive riffs as if his cello was an electric guitar. He banged, scraped and twisted it and did whatever else was necessary to produce the sounds he wanted. Then there was what he called "the four-limbed approach," which he deployed during his time with Fred Frith and Zeena Parkins in Skeleton Crew, utilized more than half the tracks here. Essentially, while Tom worked the cello with his hands, he would bring his feet into play as well; the left triggering live cello samples, the right triggering a pre-recorded cassette. Every track but one is played live, captured as heard, but you'll have a hell of a time believing that. There will never be another Tom Cora, and Gumption in Limbo is a magnificent testament to his special genius. The CD shows slight wear, but looks fine and plays flawlessly.
