Description: These three baskets were purchased in Zimbabwe in 1999 near Lake Kariba. Lake Kariba is the world's largest artificial lake and reservoir by volume. It lies 1,300 kilometres upstream from the mouth of the Zambezi river on the Indian Ocean, along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Lake Kariba was filled between 1958 and 1963 following the completion of the Kariba Dam at its northeastern end, flooding the Kariba Gorge on the Zambezi River. When this lake reservoir was filled it displaced dozens of small villages and the families struggled to find new homes and a way to make a living. Many of the women were expert weavers and they joined together to make baskets that could be sold to help support their families. These basket are just a sample of the stunning designs they make. Each weaver has a unique pattern or design so none are exactly the same. The material is all native and gathered by the weavers. The three baskets are 14",11" and 9" and fit together perfectly for storage. They also make a beautiful wall grouping to easily hang. They are perfect for holding fresh fruit or snacks too.
