Description: They Made Me a Criminal / Lady Gangster Crimebusting Double Feature! They Made Me A Criminal They Made Me A Criminal (1939) is a surprisingly gritty crime drama from the most unlikely of directors, Busby Berkeley. The director is best known for his lavish kaleidoscopic dance sequences, such as the ones in 42nd Street. Actor John Garfield (Postman Always Rings Twice) plays Johnnie, a palooka from New York City who gets mixed up in a murder. Johnnie is a suspect and must prove his innocence before time runs out. Johnnie takes refuge within a camp run by The Dead End Kids, a gang of juvenile delinquents. This early appearance by the gang is not played for laughs. A detective, played by Claude Rains (The Invisible Man) is out to find Johnnie at any cost! Will the gang turn him in? Lady Gangster Jackie Gleason makes an appearance as a mob heavy in Lady Gangster (1942). It was Gleason's fourth feature. Faye Emerson plays wannabe actress Dorothy Burton who ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time. An impressive cast includes Frank Wilcox (The Ten Commandments), Ruth Ford (The Lady Is Willing), Julie Bishop (Tarzan The Fearless) and, of course, a very nervous young Gleason.
