Description: Born January 7th, 1928 the fifth child of Lebanese immigrant parents, William Peter Blatty was raised in New York City and received a degree in English Literature from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. In 1960 he published his first novel, a humorous look at his early life, and following an escapade pretending to be a Saudi Arabian prince in Los Angeles, he won enough money on a game show to quit his job for the United States government and write full time. Following this he published three comic novels, and despite the approval of critics, these were not as successful in sales. He began a collaboration with director Blake Edwards, producing four scripts for him, then one for Danny Kaye’s The Man From Diners’ Club, and the 1965 romantic comedy Promise Her Anything. In 1971 he wrote The Exorcist, which remained on the top of the New York Best Sellers list for 17 weeks, and on the list in general for a consecutive 57. He would go on to enlist the help of director William Friedkin, and the two would produce a film for the movie, with Blatty as the screenwrite. For his accomplishments he would be awarded the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as the Golden Globe for Best Picture and Best Writing. It was the first ever horror film nominated for the Oscar Best Picture award. Blatty would continue working in the film industry following this success, though his other two pieces were not as successful as The Exorcist. Blatty retired and passed away in Bethesda, Maryland, on January 12th, 2017. He was 89. Novel is in great condition, with a nearly fully intact dust jacket, which has been placed in an additional clear plastic dust jacket for its protection. Top left corner of the dust jacket has sustained some damage, and there is a small scratch in the cover art on the right hand edge of the front cover, as well as a tear in the top right corner. Very edges of the pages show signs of foxing and discoloration, though this does not reach into the pages itself. Back dust jacket cover is in great shape, save for a small crease in both the top and bottom right hand corners. No pages with rips, tears, or stains. Signature is on the innermost page, opposite of the cover of the book, and these pages have some light staining. Faint water damage on the bottom inner crease, which does not extend in to the text, is invisible from the inside. Please examine all photos closely.
