Description: The Animal Frolic by Toba Sojo. Text by Velma Varner. Hardcover in original dust jacket. First edition. G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1954. United States. The Animal Frolic is a reproduction of the Choju Giga or Scroll of Animals, a masterpiece of early Japanese art and humor traditionally attributed to Kakuyu (Toba Sojo), the founder of caricature art in Japan. No Story is inscribed on the scroll although, through the centuries, there have been many interpretations of the satirical overtones in the animal theme. The text for this book was written by Velma Varner. Printed from the original scroll, now in the temple of Kozanji, Kyoto, Japan, The Animal Frolic faithfully reproduces the 12th century masterpiece in its entirety. Hardcover volume in original unclipped dust jacket (protected in mylar wrapper.) Dust jacket is in excellent condition, with only minor wear at the top of the spine and corners and a small chip missing from the bottom of the spine. Red cloth-covered boards are bright and clean, but have some bleaching at the bottoms. Pages are clean and unmarked inside. First US edition, 1954. Very Good+ condition, overall.
