Description: Ted Muehling for Nymphenburg "Faux Repair" Breakfast Plate Pistachio Green Porcelain Gold Kintsugi Trompe l'oeil RARE From the acclaimed German company Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, this plate references the Japanese tradition of drawing attention to imperfections through kintsugi, the art of repairing broken ceramics with a gold mend. In highlighting a flaw with gold, the repair is thought to make a piece of once-broken pottery even more beautiful than it was in its original, unbroken state. Ted Muehling simulates a break in this plate by painting a sinuous gold stroke onto its surface. The Faux Repair line of plates has not been in production for almost two decades now, making these plates exceedingly rare. N.B. To be clear, this plate is not broken and it never was broken; the painted gold line gives the illusion of a kintsugi repair, but it is not, in fact, actually kintsugi. The reverse of the plate is marked with the following information: the crowned Nymphenburg coat of arms surrounded by the words "Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg F" all stamped in olive green paint; the numbers "40407/29 133" handwritten in olive green paint and next to these numbers the Nymphenburg coat of arms and the number "1723" handwritten and a squiggle design of some sort, all impressed into the wet porcelain prior to firing; and, finally, Ted Muehling's signature, stamped in olive green paint (see final photo above). 8.75" diameter Excellent Condition, no flaws or defects
