Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Tamerlane by Edgar Allan Poe auction notice, with two separate pages reproducing the front and back covers of what is now known as the Henry E. Huntington library copy, the first copy discovered with its covers intact. This advertisement represents the first time the covers of Tamerlane were reprinted, and was also the first time a first edition of the book was sold at auction. Printed along the side of the reproduced front cover is: "Fac-Simile of the Covers of Poe's Tamerlane, No. 1076, to be Sold Thursday, April 28th at 2:30 P.M." EXCEEDINGLY RARE. I cannot find another example of this announcement that has sold, nor even mention of its existence. At the time of the sale, the copy of Tamerlane that these pages were reproduced from was owned by George Burnham Ives of Salem, MA (1856-1930), and was sold at auction by Libbie & Co. of Boston, MA on April 28, 1892. It was item 1076 in the auction, and sold to Dodd, Mead & Co., New York booksellers for $1,850 (the equivalent of $64,000 in today's dollars). The front page has two small chips, as shown. Otherwise, the pages are in Very Good condition, with minor creasing at bottom. I guarantee the authenticity of this item. If it fails to pass authentification at any time, return for a full refund.
