This cross stitch pattern was adapted and inspired by an original Navajo American rug, originally woven by hand. these Storm Pattern rugs were associated with the Tuba Trading Post on the western side of the Navajo reservation. The first appearance of this design was popularized by J.B. Moore, a rug trader at the Crystal Trading Post in the 1910's. Thus design usually incorporates a center rectangular element connected by diagonal stepped lines to elements in each of the four corners of the rug. The Storm Pattern is said to be highly symbolic and associated with the rainstorms in the growing season. Components of the rug's design includes representations of the Navajo's four sacred mountains, lightening bolts. snowflakes and water bugs. These rugs are woven in unlimited variety of colors and it is a very popular design. This pattern, adapted to use as cross stitch and needlepoint, can be used as a whole design or components of its design elements. It can be used to create wall hangings, pillows, runners and even rugs. The pattern is 168 x 240 stitches, using 14 count White ( you can use a tan or light brown Aida cloth to eliminated background stitches) Aida Cloth the design size is 12 x 17 inches. But you must add at least 3 inches around design size when purchasing cloth. The pattern also features a color photo to help aid in recreating the design and includes DMC Floss color key.
