Description: Stanley Bailey #4 cordovan smoothing plane. This is a garage sale find. It has been disassembled, inspected, cleaned and lubricated. No repairs were required. The date of its production run is difficult to pin down. My web research suggests it was in the neighborhood of 1967 and 1972. Many cordovans were made but apparently few actually had the word Bailey on the base casting. It’s pretty safe to say it was the end of Stanley’s remarkable century long run of Bailey Planes. Some ‘typologists’ call it a type 21. It has the depth adjustment system with lateral adjustment that Leonard Bailey patented circa 1860. It is 9” long with a 2” wide cutting iron and weighs about few ounces less than 4 pounds. It’s a smoothing plane - made to render a perfectly smooth surface to make rough lumber into usable stock for artisans to ply their craft. The best descriptor of its functional condition is unused. Judging by the factory sharpening marks on the cutting edge of the iron it appears to be one of those tools that was used once or twice and set aside. It is operationally perfect. It has the look of age without use. It is rust and dirt free and has no physical defects of consequence. It not flawless however. There are occasional loss of finish where the paint has worn through; most notably near the tote and toe of the base. There is some micro-pitting on the sole and the full size iron. It is an excellent tool that can be used as a multipurpose plane. It will deliver decades of good service. Give it a good honing and it’ll be ready to go. Please review the photos and message me if you have any questions. Thanks WC
