It was possibly cast to raise money for the cause for her beatification which took place in 1980. It shows St Kateri in Native American dress holding a lily. The reverse has an anglicized version of her name: Catherine. St Kateri was the first Native American to achieve sainthood. She was born to a Christian Algonquin woman, but was kidnapped and married to a pagan Mohawk chief. She contracted smallpox which scarred her and left her eyesight damaged. In 1678 she was converted and baptized by a Jesuit missionary priest. After she was abused and shunned for her faith by others in her village, she walked 200 miles through the wilderness to find refuge in the Christian Native American village of Sault-Sainte-Maire. There she lived a life devoted to Christ and died in 1680 at the age of 24. She is called "The Lily of the Mohawks". The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece.
