Description: TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY THE AMERICAN NOVELIST AND NOBEL LAUREATE Author: Lewis, Sinclair Title: TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY THE AMERICAN NOVELIST AND NOBEL LAUREATE Description: An important letter concerning the writer's then-forthcoming novel, Main Street (1920), a critical and commercial success which established Lewis (1885-1951) as a leading voice in the literary world.Dated July 27, 1920, the letter is written in reply to Herbert Ellwood Douglass (1901-69), a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and an admirer of the writer's, who was seeking a copy of Lewis's third book, The Trail of the Hawk (1915):"I was very much flattered by your letter, which came to me on the day when I arrived in NY to turn over the just-completed MS of my new novel, 'Main Street,' to Harcourt. I 'phoned to Harpers to try to get a Trail of the Hawk, but found that as your bookman said, it's recently out of print [...] I'm returning the two dollars. Please keep it and use it to buy a Main Street when it comes out - in September, probably [...] It's really the first novel of mine that counts, and if I have you rooting for it as warmly as you have the others, I shall be very glad - and fortunate. This is the novel I've been planning for seven years and working on for three (the last eight months steadily, doing nothing else) [...] No, I shan't expect more than a full page story on it in the Post-Dispatch; hell no; that would be unreasonable, and unreasonableness is to be deplored....... Seriously, there are various problems taken up in it which might make a story of some interest, I should think. If you find a story in it, tell the publishers to send you an extra copy."Satirizing small-town life, Main Street is perhaps Sinclair Lewis's most famous book. It was the best-selling work of fiction in America for the year 1921 and played an important role in Lewis receiving the 1930 Nobel Prize for Literature, the first American so honored.Typed on a sheet of Eagle-A bond paper and boldly signed in pencil.
