Description: Royal Doulton Dinner Plate Tavern 5 Men Checkers Transferware Hand Painted 1939 Royal Doulton Dinner Plate 1939 Tavern 5 Men Checkers Transferware Hand Painted A beautiful ROYAL DOULTON Transferware Ironstone DINNER PLATE 10 1/4" with Colorized TAVERN Scene of 5 GENTLEMEN TALKING & PLAYING CHECKERS, IMPRESSED Circa July 1939 from Burslem, Staffordshire, England Henry & James Doulton purchased an interest in Pinder, Bourne & Co. in 1877. Pinder left the business in 1882 and it was reconstituted under the name Doulton & Co., Burslem. The Royal Warrant and the right to use “Royal” in the name of its products were granted in 1901. The business continued under Henry Lewis Doulton from 1897-1919 and then under his grandson, Lewis Eric Hooper, who remained chairman until 1955. The mark on this is Geoffrey Godden's mark #1334 (Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks) used from 1930. This also has the impressed 7 39 which means it was produced in July 1939. This is a superb quality decorative dinner plate. The plate has a brightly hand colored tavern scene of 5 gentlemen. Two are playing checkers and three are watching at the table. They seem to be deeply engrossed in the game and the artist has colorized the transfer with cobalt blue, red, yellow and light blues. The rim of the plate has an elegant scroll work design framing the center of the plate. While this set classified as used, the only area of concern is where the plate holder used to display this plate over the years has caused very slight paint flecks on the outermost rim where the wire holder touched the plate. This is really not visible upon inspection. See photos #4 & #7. Otherwise, we can find no chips, nicks, rubbings, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid coloring and no crazing. Look in the photos to see this. The lack of utensil scratches attests to the high quality of the ironstone china. The plates are beautiful and whimsically decorated. The dinner plate has a diameter of 10 1/4" and a height of 3/4". As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky and find it necessary to point out anything we see. We believe you will be very satisfied with this decorative set dinner plate.
