Description: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt FDR 1934 USS Houston Columbia River Original In 1934 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt sailed on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Houston up the Columbia River. This photo shows a number of smaller boats or motor launches passing the ship in the river while the ship appears still or drifting with the starboard anchor not deployed. There are three Navy floatplanes mounted on the amidship catapults. These are SOC Seagull scout-observation floatplanes which are biplanes with a single main pontoon. (Yes, I'm enjoying looking over this photo with a magnifying glass). There are many crewmembers on the various decks as well, but I cannot see the President. This would have been the end of an amazing tour. FDR traveled on this ship this year during July and August from Annapolis Maryland, through the Caribbean, down to South America, out to Hawaii, and finally to Oregon. The ship was a Northhampton-class cruiser in the US Navy, and it was later sunk during WWII in the Java Sea. This photograph is stamped on the back by Angelus Studio in Portland Oregon!! This was a local photographic studio in the late 1800s to the 1940s. This photograph does not appear to be a USN photo. The Angelus stamp implies it was a locally taken and developed photo.
