President Andrew Johnson Lot of 2 Presidential Signature Stamped Signed 1st 1866

Description: [President Andrew Johnson] Lot of 2 Presidential Signature Stamped Military Commissions for Brevet Brigadier Generals David Bell McKibbin and Oliver Paul Gooding Author: Johnson, Andrew Title: [President Andrew Johnson] Lot of 2 Presidential Signature Stamped Military Commissions for Brevet Brigadier Generals David Bell McKibbin and Oliver Paul Gooding Publication: Washington D.C. 1865-1866 Description: [President Andrew Johnson] Lot of 2 Presidential Signature Stamped Military Commissions for Brevet Brigadier Generals David Bell McKibbin and Oliver Paul Gooding, Washington D.C., 1865-1866, 15.5 x 19.5 inches, 1 pp each. Two oversized vellum documents, each with two highly detailed engravings and seal of the United States War Office; half of War Office seal missing on McKibbin document; corners lightly creased and worn; creases from being previously folded; overall very good condition. Both documents bear stamped signatures of President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Additionally, the commission for David B. McKibbin bears the signature of Edward D. Townsend, then Assistant Adjutant General of the United States Army. The commission for Oliver P. Gooding bears an Assistant Adjutant General signature as well, though I am unable to decipher the name. David Bell McKibbin (1831-1890) was a United States Army Brevet Brigadier General who fought extensively for the Union in the Civil War. He led the 14th Infantry in the long, brutal Siege of Petersburg and the 1864 Overland Campaign. This presidential document confers upon McKibbin the rank of Brevet Brigadier General for his "gallant and meritorious services during the war." Oliver Paul Gooding (1835-1909) was a United States Army Brevet Brigadier General; he was already a second lieutenant in the 10th United States Regular Infantry when the Civil War began, and was promoted to colonel and then captain after leading his men in the 1864 Red River Campaign and other offensives. This presidential document confers upon Gooding the rank of Brevet Brigadier General "for meritorious services". Edwin Stanton (1814-1869) was the U.S. Secretary of War under the Lincoln Administration, remaining in the position under President Andrew Johnson during the first years of Reconstruction. Stanton opposed Johnson's lenient policies toward the former Confederate States. Johnson, who frequently met with fierce opposition from the Republican-dominated Congress over the same issue, attempted to dismiss Stanton, which ultimately led to Johnon's impeachment in 1868 by the House of Representatives. Stanton also organized the manhunt for Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth. Very Good.
