Description: First edition hardcover copy of Telling Tommy About Famous People in Their Youth, by Paul Pim (Cupples and Leon, 1940). Pim was a popular cartoonist in the early 20th century, known for the single-panel "Baby Mine" series syndicated in over 60 newspapers. In the late 1930s, he started writing theTelling Tommy series of nonfiction books for children, which included short reference essays on a number of topics, paired with one-page illustrations. Telling Tommy About Famous People in Their Youth features sketches of historical figures (Joan of Arc, Napoleon, Ulysses S. Grant, etc.), authors (Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, etc.) and more recent cultural figures (Charles Lindbergh, Marconi, Will Rogers, etc.). The essays are well-written, but it's the illustrations that make the volume. This book is in very good condition, with moderate wear (and a few small tears) to the dust jacket, but with a tight spine and clean pages throughout.
