Description: Here is a wonderful drawing/sketch by Maxfield Parrish. It is finished in pen and India ink on ultra smooth wove paper. The sheet measures 29 x 19.5 cm and is in very good condition. Maxfield Parrish was probably the best known and most beloved artist of the 20thC, with the possible exception of Norman Rockwell. It was once said that an estimated 1 in 4 homes had a copy of "Daybreak" (his most popular work) hanging in their home after it’s publication. If you aren’t familiar with much of his work, or any, I would highly recommend that you Google him and take a look. It is easy to see why he was so popular. He did mostly illustrations for advertising and magazine covers, even most of his paintings were later converted to some type of printed work. At any rate, there has been noone like him before or since. He had a couple of somewhat strange techniques that he used in painting and drawing for prints. His paintings were layered in very thin films of pigment, which allowed the light through to bounce off the white background. This gave his paintings a jewel like appearance and was very different from his contemporaries. His drawings, which were stand alone, or for prints were done with Ben-Day media. This was done for terrific highlight effect, but also served the purpose of making them easier to print. This method was later replaced with the half-tone process…as can be seen in Warhol’s work. Again, having researched this work and not finding it published anywhere, I assumed it to be a type of working drawing for a stage scenery, which he also did very often. It does make sense, it would be a fine backdrop for some type of dramatic, fantastical play. The surface is in fantastic condition, maybe a bit muddled in places due to it’s age. Signed with initial "MP" lower right. Historically, actual drawings of his dont come up very often. His published originals come up here and there but they are very valuable. This is a more realistic work, but retaining all of the charm. It is housed in a 4-ply rag overthrow museum board mount. The drawing was obtained directly from the artist. I realize that I have complained in the past about my inability to get realistic photos of some works. Not all works photo well, and lighting makes it even more difficult. Well, this one has been the most difficult yet. I am guessing that it is because of the various dots that are on it’s surface. Not only are they different tonal values, but they are also made with different media. These media include India ink, graphite and litho crayon, all of which have different reflective properties. Plus, I have little knowledge, or talent with the fine points of photography. This gives a singly dimensional appearance in the photos, which is not attractive. The drawing itself is absolutely beautiful live, full of depth and life, however, it does not translate well. Anyway, if you need more or other photos, ask and I will do my best.
