Description: ARTIST: Unknown. The original painting was painted by Arthur David McCormick (1860-1943), who was a renowned British artist. Today, from the little information I’ve been able to find, the original might be lost, but a colored engraving of it is exhibited in the National Maritime Museum in London. The original was apparently exhibited in 1934. I’ve chosen to mark the artist as unknown, since the signature is a monogram “CC”, and I cannot match this to any known signatures from McCormick. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a colorful and detailed rendering of Admiral John Benbow’s last fight. It shows the lethally wounded officer surrounded by his closest friends and the ship’s crew. In the background a huge warship is burning. Benbow is a historical person, who lived from 1653-1702 and became famous for his naval battles against the French in the Caribbean. He was also immortalized by Robert Louis Stevenson, who named the inn in his famous novel “Treasure island” after him. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1934-1960. Signed: Monogram “CC” in the lower left corner. SIZE: With frame: 117 cm/46.1" * 97 cm/38.2". Without frame: 101 cm/39.8" * 81 cm/31.9". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint, but it does have some craquelure. The frame has scratches and stains.
