Noel Buxton Travel Reflections Armenia Genocide Armenian Kurd Lake Urmia history

Description: Noel Buxton Rare Book - Travels and Reflections. 1929, 223 pages, with photographs. Noel Buxton (1869-1948), a member of British Parliament, traveled around the world and was involved in European and Near Eastern politics*. In 1913, he visited Kurdistan and Armenia. In Lake Urmia region his party was surrounded and threatened by a pack of Kurdish bandits. While Buxton was considering how to get out “an Armenian member of our party, with the recklessness of his race, lost his temper, flung himself from his horse, and flew at the throat of the leader. The situation was critical…I jumped off my horse and suppressed the Armenian just in time. It was needless to invite death.” (page 33). In Turkey, he witnessed another behavior of Armenians. He states that the Young Turks failed in gaining trust and support of the Armenians preferring instead to continue Sultan Abdul Hamid’s policy granting to the Kurds carte blanche for free killing of Armenian peasants and dispossessing their properties. “A gendarme riding with us as escort illustrated the situation thus: ‘Look at that village, I could go there and kill half a dozen people. Who would punish me? I am a Kurd…Early every moring you might see the door of the Russian Consulate at Van besieged by applicants for passports. Life among Kurds, was a living death, and the villagers were leaving for Russia or America.” (page 143). *Noel Buxton and his brother, Charles, survived an assassination attempt in Bucarest (1914). The assassin was sent by Enver and Talaat because he was instrumental in keeping Bulgaria from joining the war. The assassin, Hassan Taxim, a young fanatic nationalist explained to Buxton – “Turks do not pardon their enemies.”
