Description: NGC VF Roman AE3 Valentinian II AD375-392 Being born into the imperial family did not guarantee a long or happy life - and Valentinian II's life was neither. He was born in 371 to Valentinian I and his second wife Justina. After his father's death in 375 he was pushed into the imperial role by the generals. He shared rule of the Western Empire with his elder brother Gratian until his death in 383. The later years of his rule were marked by limited powers and a great deal of attempts by his generals to control him. It is still debated whether or not his death at 21 was a suicide or a homicide staged by Arbogast (one of his generals and a rival).
