It’s a break from the realistic low country oil paintings I’m best known for. This particular painting was created by applying many thin layers of oil combined with the cold wax medium. Each layer has to dry completely before the subsequent layer is added. A pallet knife is used to scrape and cut into the layers. This creates the depth and transparency in the painting. Cold Wax Explained:Cold Wax is an oil painting medium characterized by a buttery soft paste composed of beeswax, a small amount of solvent, and resin. When mixed with oil paint on the palette, Cold Wax enhances the paint by adding body, transparency, and depth. This medium facilitates expressive brushwork and allows for carving into paint layers with palette knives. Cold Wax imparts a translucent quality to oil colors, similar to the surfaces of encaustic paintings. The formulation of Cold Wax Medium includes natural beeswax pastilles, Gamsol, and a minimal quantity of alkyd resin. The term “cold” indicates that no heat is required for application; the medium dries through solvent evaporation rather than cooling, as seen in encaustic techniques. As Gamsol evaporates, the soft wax solidifies to a consistency comparable to that of a beeswax candle. This medium effectively thickens oil colors and provides a matte finish.
