Description: Yusef Komunyakaa (born James William Brown; April 29, 1941) is an American poet who was a professor in the Council of Humanities and Creative Writing at Princeton University and also taught at New York University. He is a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers. Komunyakaa and NEON VERNACULAR received the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in addition to the 1994 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. He also received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. Komunyakaa received the 2007 Louisiana Writer Award for his enduring contribution to poetry. His subject matter ranges from the black experience through rural Southern life before the Civil Rights era and his experience as a soldier during the Vietnam War. This book is signed twice by Komunyakaa both under his name on the title page as well as with his trademark signature style with a sideways date (of July 25, 2022) and his “Peace” notation. Taped inside the front cover of the book is a picture of “Margaret”, whom he signed the book to, with the author and noted that it was at Squaw Valley California 2002 (now called Olympic Valley). This took place at the 33rd Annual Squaw Valley Community of Writers event in Olympic Village. Komunyakaa was one of the five staff writers that read their poetry to the paying audience on July 25, 2002. The other four poets were Lucille Clifton, Li-Young Lee, Galway Kinnell and Sharon Olds. This is a very collectible book.
