Live At Massey Hall is a rock gem."...a musical and sonic treat Young fans would be foolish to pass up. Surely this won't be in-print forever, so get it while you can! I Am A Child Neil Young with Crazy Horse Odeon - Budokan 1976 1ST EDITION LP Live in London & Tokyo 1976 on Vinyl LP! Solo Acoustic & Electric with Crazy Horse! First Time on Vinyl! Originally released as Disc 10 in the CD box set "Neil Young Archives Vol II", this is Odeon Budokan's first release on vinyl. Odeon Budokan is a live album from the Neil Young with Crazy Horse tour that occurred in March 1976. Side 1 of the album contains an intimate solo acoustic performance by Neil Young recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon. Side 2 contains an electric live performance with Crazy Horse, recorded at the Budokan in Tokyo. Odeon Budokan stands out somewhat from even the stronger entries in Young's Official Bootleg Series, capturing two distinctive sides of his appeal in peak form....More so than some of the other bootleg-like releases from Young's archival expeditions, Odeon Budokan exemplifies how the mid-'70s was a time when he was operating at full force in several directions at once. As both a writer of gentle, humanity-affirming songs and as the leader of a reckless rock band, Odeon Budokan finds Young at the top of his game. -Fred Thomas, AllMusic, 4/5 stars Features Vinyl LP Neil Young Archives Special Release Series Disc 04 First Time on Vinyl Mastered from Original Analog Tapes Gatefold Jacket Made in the Netherlands Selections Side One: The Old Laughing Lady After the Gold Rush Too Far Gone Old Man Stringman Side Two: Don't Cry No Tears Cowgirl In the Sand Lotta Love Drive Back Cortez the Killer Neil Young with the Santa Monica Flyers Somewhere Under the Rainbow (Nov. 5, 1973) 2 LP SET Neil Live on the Legendary Tonight's the Night Tour on 2LP! Mixed & Mastered by Neil Young & Niko Bolas! Part of the "Official Bootleg Series"! Neil Young and the Santa Monica Flyers (Neil Young, Nils Lofgren, Ben Keith, Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina) played London's Rainbow Theatre on November 5th, 1973, with the first half of the concert dedicated to Neil Young's masterpiece album Tonight's the Night. The intense concert was recorded by Pete Long, and includes riveting versions of the Tonight's the Night tracks, plus Young classics "Cowgirl in the Sand," "Don't Be Denied" and "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong". Recorded by Pete Long at The Rainbow Theatre in London, England on November 5, 1973. Mixed and mastered by The Volume Dealers (Neil Young and Niko Bolas). Somewhere Under the Rainbow manages to feel intimate and hushed even when it's rocking hard and spilling out messily. All of the Official Bootleg Series releases are valuable documents of various phases of Neil's career, but this one has a personality that sets it apart. -Fred Thomas, AllMusic, 4/5 stars Features Double LP Neil Young Archives Official Bootleg Series Recorded by Pete Long at The Rainbow Theatre, London, November 5, 1973 Mixed & Mastered by "The Volume Dealers": Neil Young & Niko Bolas Gatefold Jacket Made in USA Musicians Neil Young guitar, vocals Nils Lofgren lead and rhythm guitars, piano, accordion, vocals Ben Keith steel guitar, vocals Billy Talbot bass, vocals Ralph Molina drums, vocals Selections Side One: Tonight's the Night Mellow My Mind World on a String Speakin' Out Albuquerque Side Two: New Mama Roll Another Number (For the Road) Tired Eyes Tonight's the Night - Part II Side Three: Flying on the Ground Is Wrong Human Highway Helpless Side Four: Don't Be Denied Cowgirl in the Sand Neil Young Time Fades Away 50th Anniversary Edition LP (Clear Vinyl) 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Clear Vinyl LP! First Live Album Released by Neil Young! Includes Bonus Track "The Last Trip to Tulsa"! Time Fades Away was the first live album released by Neil Young. He is backed on the album by The Stray Gators, the band who played on Harvest, and including the superb musicians Ben Keith, Jack Nitzsche, and Tim Drummond. David Crosby and Graham Nash are special guest musicians. The album followed the release of Young's hugely successful album Harvest, and when it was released in 1973 it featured all previously unreleased songs. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this album the track "The Last Trip To Tulsa" (originally released as a B-side to the 1973 single of "Time Fades Away") has been added to the album. This limited-edition LP is pressed on clear vinyl. From Neil: "Time Fades Away is taken from a tour in 1973, a tough time to go on the road, right after the death of Danny Whitten. With me on the tour, Ben Keith, Jack Nitzsche, Tim Drummond and Kenny Buttrey made up this wonderful band of musicians. Johnny Barbata joined the tour half way through down near New Orleans, and he can be heard playing drums throughout this recording. Johnny was originally from the Turtles. The tour was about 3 months and it was my very first big tour, traveling throughout the USA and parts of Canada, playing full sized arenas with between 15 and 19 thousand people in the audience. We had never done this before and neither had many other people. Our PA was lifted on towers on either side of the stage, not like today's tours where everything hangs from the ceiling of the building. The monitors, which were to allow me to hear what I was singing, were not big enough and I had to sing very loud just to hear myself. Again, no one had done this before at the time and we were blazing some new ground in 1973. You can hear it in my voice. We played a lot of Harvest songs on the tour but I wanted to make a live album of new material. That is what Time Fades Away is. It was not well received, much less popular than many of my previous records, but I did do what I wanted to do and that was the most important thing to me. Elliot Mazer produced and did a great job in the truck we carried to all the shows. Some of the already known songs we did on the tour were released many years later on Tuscaloosa (which features Kenny Buttrey on drums). The whole tour was stressful and Time Fades Away does reflect that. I am still uncomfortable hearing it even today, though I still hear from a people who liked it. Thank goodness for these die-hard fans!" Michael Fremer Rated 9/10 Music, 9/10 Sonics! This is the first official release by The Ducks - a short-lived group that Neil played with in 1977. The Ducks featured Neil (guitar, harmonica and vocals), Bob Mosely (bass and vocals), Jeff Blackburn (guitar and vocals) and Johnny Craviotto (drums). Mosely was an original member of Bay Area band Moby Grape; Blackburn had previously fronted his own band and co-wrote with Neil the classic track "My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)." The band played several shows in Santa Cruz, CA and other California venues during two months in 1977, and this 3LP, 25-track live album features highlights from those shows. The setlists were very democratic, with each member of the band taking the lead in turn. Five Neil Young songs are showcased, including a rocking version of "Mr. Soul," plus beautiful renditions of "Are You Ready for the Country," "Little Wing," "Sail Away" and "Human Highway." Young of late has pumped out a large volume of records, some great and some mediocre. This is one of the greats. It's got the ferocity of Buffalo Springfield, plus the crunchy wall of guitar sound perfected by Crazy Horse plus a rare occasion where Neil Young blends in with a band instead of leading or dominating it. He's also in fine voice and the recording is 'you are there' immediate analog multitrack to digital mix down you're sure to enjoy cranked up club level loud. -Michael Fremer, Tracking Angle, Music 9/10, Sound 9/10 The Ducks were a bar band in the same way NRBQ were a bar band - their mix of country rock, blues, and tough, straight-ahead rock & roll was rooted in the classics without getting mired in clichés. While they had good, unpretentious fun on-stage, they also had impressive chops and a catalog of fine material, and the energy of seeing a group this good in a funky, intimate setting was not lost on their audiences. Young seems to be having a ball not having to be the star of the show, and his guitar work is excellent, ripping out solos in his unmistakable style but also buzzing along beside Blackburn.....Mosley and Blackburn's originals are good enough to stand up to comparison to Young's, and Mosley seemingly taught some of the tricks of Moby Grape's glorious harmonies to his fellow Ducks, feeling rougher but no less satisfying. Mosley and Craviotto are a superb rhythm section, too, knowing when to groove and when to push the music into fifth gear. It's a shame the Ducks didn't have the chance to mature and cut a studio album, because they clearly had talent and potential to spare, but there's no shame in being a truly great bar band, and High Flyin' shows the Ducks were something special... -Mark Deming, AllMusic 4/5 stars (The AllMusic 2023 Year in Review - Favorite Archival Releases) Features 3LP Neil Young Archives Official Bootleg Series First Official Release by The Ducks Wide-Spine Gatefold Made in USA Selections Side One: I Am a Dreamer Younger Days Gypsy Wedding Are You Ready for the Country? Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering! Etching On Side D!The previously unreleased archival live record comes from the Time Fades Away tour and was recorded absolutely live at Memorial Auditorium, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL, on February 5th, 1973."It’s from the period right around Harvest and Tonight’s the Night," Young told Rolling Stone. "For me, it’s edgy. It’s like those mellow songs with an edge. It’s really trippy to be down in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and singing those songs from Harvest and the songs that we were doing for Time Fades Away before it came out. I found this thing and it had such a great attitude to it. I just loved the whole night, so I put that together with [engineer] John Hanlon."This tour was previously documented on the live LP Times Fades Away, but that was recorded after original Stray Gators drummer Kenny Buttrey left the group and was replaced by Johnny Barbata.
