Description: GOLD GALENA SPECIMEN from MEXICO Ruler is 1/4" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter. Specimen weight: 2.55 Gram - 39.4 Grains Size: 18.1X9.8X8.13 mm Yellow gold pokes out of this black galena rock. I count five significant blebs of oro with more specks of gold scattered elsewhere. According to my source, who purchased this material from a vendor back in 1971, it's origin is somewhere in the Sierra Madre Mtns. near Mazatlan, Mexico. It's unusual ore. Your collection of micromounts should welcome it aboard. For those who've kept track of my store these past several years, you'll know I don't sell low-grade specimens. If it shows gold, it can't be low grade ore. I deal in naturally-occurring gold ores with visible gold. These high-grade beauties are hard to find and expensive to obtain. My prices aren't based upon quantity of gold contained, but on the fact that it's there. Located in La Cholla Mining District, his creepy, cavernous abode had a reputation for rich, cemented gravels. So Crazy Larry, as he was affectionately known, told us stories which, once we'd visited his mine, no longer seemed nearly so unbelievable. He said there were seven miles of drifts down there. It'd be tough to prove, but again seemed plausible. Descending down a rickety, chained-together, wooden ladder, we entered the mine. Larry guided us past several stoped-out chambers. Apparently, these had once been pockets of high-grade gravel. Inside these stopes, barely-suspended layers of stratified gravel hung from the ceilings. Sensing the instability of the ground was a bit unnerving when one considered the least little tremor might bring tons of unsupported rock cascading down onto our noggins. Though not particularly comfortable, the underground climate was pleasant enough. At least it was cool, so Larry spent his summers living inside the mine. It was certainly no palace, but he called it home. Better him than me. I could never have stomached that stagnant, guano-permeated air for very long. It appeared that critters inhabited his mine. Animal tracks were scattered everywhere. Some belonged to coatamundi or 'miners cats'. Folks refer to these as 'ringtails'. I had encountered them before, contacts which would explain how they wound up characterized as miner's pets. One late night, during a Laguna Mtns. prospecting trip, I closed the book on my evening read, turned off the light, and fell asleep. A ringtail, figuring my van's engine compartment made a comfy chow hall, clambered onto the motor and commenced cleaning the contents of a discarded soup can. Shaken from a deep slumber, try wrapping your mind around that ruckus at 1 o'clock in the A.M. Thanks for checking out our digs. Gold of Eldorado 1-14-13
