Description: This listing consists of two letters. NOTE: my apologies for the low quality of these photos. One of the letters is a signed letter by Roger Price (1918-1990), a notable American humorist, writer, artist, editor, and publisher. This letter includes a small drawing by Roger Price of himself. Roger Price is best known these days for his co-invention (along with writer Leonard Stern) of the party game MAD LIBS, and for his humorous series of drawings known as DROODLES. One very well-known droodle is titled SHIP ARRIVING TOO LATE TO SAVE A DROWNING WITCH. Price wrote and published many humorous books, including the bestseller IN ONE HEAD AND OUT THE OTHER (1951). He wrote for and appeared on many television shows, and also had small parts acting in many movies. This letter was sent to the editor of Playboy, Ray Russell (1924-1999). The other letter is an unsigned copy of Russell's reply to Price. These two letters came from the files of Playboy Magazine. In his letter, Roger Price thanks Russell for a previous letter, and then briefly discusses a humorous story that he was submitting to Playboy, titled "The Tree". He then compliments Russell on a story that had been published in Playboy in 1956. Price goes on to state that he had recently been doing more writing. In an interesting postscript, he discusses his recently published first book of MAD LIBS, as well as an upcoming episode of the Steve Allen Show wherein Steve Allen was going to promote MAD LIBS. Price signed the letter "Roger", and then sketched a humorous self- portrait next to his signature. The letter is typed on a sheet of stationery of Price- Stern Publishers, the publishing company that Price had co-founded with Leonard Stern. This letter is not dated. However, Ray Russell's reply is dated January 7, 1959, so Price's letter would most likely have been written in late 1958 or the first days of 1959. In his letter of reply, Russell states that Playboy will be publishing Price's story "The Tree" (the story was in fact published in the September 1959 issue of Playboy). Russell discusses in interesting detail some nuances of editing that the story would undergo before being published, and then goes on to discuss MAD LIBS. Of particular interest, in the closing paragraph Russell discusses their mutual friend Harvey Kurtzman, the famous artist and humorist who created MAD Magazine for EC Comics. These two letters have some browning and other minor defects, but are otherwise in very good condition. The autographed letter comes with a certificate of authenticity from JG Autographs. The letter and the certificate of authenticity are enclosed in a plastic page, which is open at the top, allowing easy access, while keeping the letter protected.
