Barnum: Circus Boy by Augusta StevensonJ. Sterling Morton: Arbor Day Boy by Clyde B. Moore Joel Chandler Harris: Young Storyteller by Ethel M. WeddleWilliam Fargo: Boy Mail Carrier by Katharine E. Wilkie John Smith: Jamestown Boy by Thomas F. Barton *Pro Tip #1 - the owner of these books read almost the entire series as a boy (over 200 books). According to him, Stephen Decatur (included in this set) was one of his favorite (perhaps THE favorite) in the whole series. Lots of action in this book. Until the modern era (and our modern educational system), Stephen Decatur was one of the most popular figures in American history, well-known by every schoolboy for his many brave and heroic deeds during the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812. However, history books used in American schools today will often avoid mention of Stephen Decatur or the facts surrounding the Barbary Wars. In the early days of our Republic, pirates from North Africa had been seizing ships and raiding and enslaving European men, women, and children living along the coast of Europe for generations. After America won its independence and became a country, American ships became a target of these pirates as well. America's first foreign conflict was to send Stephen Decatur and the marines over to North Africa to solve this problem. The old Marine's Hymn line "to the shores of Tripoli" is a reference to this First Barbary War conflict. *Pro Tip #2 - Also according to the previous owner of these books: Augusta Stevenson was the author of the original book in this series (Abe Lincoln: Frontier Boy, copyright 1932). Her books were consistently some of the most well written and interesting books in the series, and any of the approximately 30 titles written by her for this series would be a good choice to introduce a young person to Childhood of Famous American Biographies. THIS SET INCLUDES 2 AUGUSTA STEVENSON TITLES.
