Listed Artist Ricardo De Los Rios (1846-1929) Signed Oil Painting On Canvas 1874

Description: Winner receives a stunning signed & dated oil painting on canvas by well listed Spanish artist Ricardo (Richard) De Los Rios (1846-1929). The painting depicts a genre scene with a soldier reading a letter and is signed & dated 1874 in the lower left corner, seen magnified in picture 7. The painting is housed in a gorgeous, ornate gold gilt gesso frame with name placard, seen magnified in picture 8. The painting is in exquisite condition with no damage whatsoever to mention. There are no rips, tears, repairs, water damage, in-painting, or paint losses. The original gallery frame is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, losses, or repairs. There is minor age related wear including some stress cracks at the corners, but they don't compromise the integrity of the frame. Picture 9 shows a magnified portion of the upper left corner to get an idea of the stress cracks. The piece is an absolute gem and ready for hanging as-is. He learned the art of painting from Isidore Pils , at the studio of the Ecole des Beaux - Arts in Paris. Noticed since 1868, and compared by his inspiration to Goya, he produced war scenes, typical figures, portraits, interiors, still lifes, as well as copies of paintings by masters. He lives at this time rue de Vanves, then after 1870 at 11 boulevard du Montparnasse. He was an exhibitor from 1867 at the Salon, and became an associate member of the Society of French Artists and exhibited at their salon regularly until 1899, as well as with the National Society of Fine Arts from 1890 to 1894. He received a silver medal at the 1889 World Fair and exhibited abroad (including Chicago in 1893). De Los Rios was close to the circle of Alfred Cadart , founder of the Society of Aquafortists , and probably trained to this art by one of its members. Cadart published among others eight original plates for the subscribers of The New Illustration (1876-77) and The Etching in ... (1877-81). He moved during this time to 79 Boulevard de Courcelles (around 1877), then to 46 rue de Chateaudun (around 1885). Ricardo De Los Rios was a very prolific illustrator. He collaborated with Gil Blas , L'Art , L'Artiste , and especially the Gazette des Beaux-Arts (1879-1897). For the publishers of illustrated works, often of high bibliophilic performance, he produces mainly engravings of interpretation from drawings by other artists. The famous New York merchant Knoedler represents him for a time. In August 1894, he was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. He died in May 1929 in Madrid.
