Description: Lewisia rediviva v. minor is a perennial herb in the Montiaceae family. Common names are Bitterroot or Sand Rose. A native to Western North America. The word rediviva means revived or reborn, meaning this plant will come back to life from the roots when it looks dead. Single flowers appear in April through July on the stems, which reach a couple of inches tall. The flowers can range in colors from white to lavender. It likes to grow in gravelly soil or even rocky soil. The roots may be eaten after being peeled and then boiled. Zones 3-7 Germination Use 100 grit sandpaper by placing seeds on sandpaper and gently rubbing the seeds in a circular motion. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
