These copies were a very limited edition manufactured at the Slavyanskaya Porcelain Factory in Ukraine. Less than 100 such copies were made. Large and massive, it stands approx. 9 ¼” tall; the plinth is approx. 7 ½” x 5 ½”; weighs approx. 3 lbs. 5 oz. Off-white and glazed. The bust is in impeccable condition, without any cracks, chips, scratches, significant scuffs or other damage. Very clean, just beautifully preserved through and through! Contrary to the most widely known portraits and statues of Karl Marx, the facial expression of this bust is quite benevolent. It seems that nostalgia for the communist regime was very much alive in the former Soviet Union, enough to prompt creation of this copy of Karev’s bust. About a dozen people, including members of his large family, attended Marx’s funeral in London in 1883. Yet, even now there are few thinkers whose ideas have been as influential as Marxism. The impact of its influence can be compared to the rise of a major religion.
