Description: June 1864 Soldier's Wife Relief 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry [Previously served with the 30th NY Infantry] The Board of Relief of Saratoga Springs, NY instructs Grocer Jacob W. Pitney, on a partially printed form: “Please pay (in trade from your Store) to “Mrs Conly Wife of James Conly of Co. C 2 Vet C Regt. N. Y. S. V. Three dollars and charge the same to the town of Saratoga Springs...” Signed by the Auditors and Town Clerk of Saratoga Springs James Conly, a shoemaker by occupation, was born in Ireland in 1831. His first wife, Ann Conly, would be the recipient of this relief. In the 1870 census James is already married to Ellen Conly. Ann must have died prior to this. James enlisted 5/7/61 and was mustered into Co. F, NY 30th Infantry and mustered out 6/18/63. Major engagements include, 2nd Bull run, South Mountain, Antietam, and Chancellorsville. He enlisted again on 7/15/63 and served in Co. F, 2nd NY Vet Cavalry Jacob W. Pitney is listed as a grocer in the federal census. Research included with purchase.
