John Gielgud - An Actor's Biography 1952 1st signed + Alec Guinness 's W H Auden

Description: John Gielgud - An Actor's Biography in Pictures - 1952 first edition published by John Lehmann First edition. 128 pages. Inscribed to the half-title page: "Dear Alec from John, who rejoices in your success and will always be proud of your friendship November 1952.". The recipient was fellow renowned actor Alec Guinness, who worked with Gielgud on several occasions. With another book from Alec Guinness's library, a U.S. first edition of W. H. Auden's 'Another Time', signed & dated by Guinness to the front endpaper in the year of publication. The pair are thought to have been sold as part of a large 1500 book job lot of Guinness's Library at Sotheby's in 2011. The Gielgud is firmly bound in greyish blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, the boards are slightly bowed, marked and faded and the extremities are bumped and rubbed. The text block is slightly toned and marked. The dust jacket is original and not price clipped, it is quite rubbed and marked with small chips and short closed tears to the edges. The Auden is quite firmly bound in marked bumped and rubbed red cloth, lettered and decorated in heavily tarnished gilt. The text block is foxed, marked and age toned. A particularly good association copy, marking the relationship between two of the greatest British actors of the twentieth century, along with Guinness's own copy of one of his favourite poet's works.
