Description: [INDIANA] [BANKING] The Charter of the State Bank of Indiana Incorporated by an Act of Assembly in 1834 Author: [Indiana General Assembly] Title: [INDIANA] [BANKING] The Charter of the State Bank of Indiana Incorporated by an Act of Assembly in 1834 Publication: [Indianapolis]: Douglass and Maguire, Printers, 1834 Edition: First Edition Description: Sewn binding. Small octavo, 42pp. Removed, and possibly wanting original wrappers. Contemporary small red ink marking to title leaf, as well as contemporary owner's name ("C. K. Smith" [?]). Some foxing, but sound and mostly clean; about very good. The Bank of Indiana was established in Jaunary 1834 in response to the closure of the Second Bank of the United States by President Andrew Jackson, one of a number of state level insitutions to emerge from that policy. The bylaws and organizational details of the bank are contained within, with summary details and subject headings printed in the margins. A rather "rough and ready" production, unevenly trimmed on the top (but with no loss to content). Curiously, there are no separately listed holdings in OCLC, though we note a copy at AAS, and the Checklist of American Imprints noted copies at the Library of Congress and at least two Indiana institutions. Presumably some of these have since been de-accessioned and sold, but it's possible that either those or several other copies remain in libraries as part of un-catalogued sammelbands and the like. In any event, the last appearance that we can trace in commerce was in a Midland catalog in 1949. A scarce piece of Indiana history, and a foundational document from one of its early instutions, having been founded less than two decades into Indiana's statehood. Very good-.
