Description: 1903 Authentic Stone ChromolithographIlluminated Manuscript (Example)Satisfaction GuaranteedThis is an authentic 1903 print--NOT a recent reproduction This plate features a miniature example of a medieval Illuminated Manuscript, specifically a Latin manuscript entitled, "Book of Hours of the Virgin Mary." This is an example of the illustration popular in this type of devotional text, and it is NOT itself medieval in origin. That is, it is an antique (circa turn of the 20th century, dated 1903) reproduction of an ancient illustration. This is a carefully drawn representation, with very fine detail and masterful application of a limited color palette, including beautiful gold metallic ink. The metallic ink does not really reveal itself in the scan of the whole image, but I have included close-up photographs of the sheet so that you can see the detail and the glint from the gold ink. This beautiful illustration, dated 1903 in the plate, was exquisitely printed by the Julius Bien & Company in New York City, one of the most prestigious lithographers of the early 20th Century. This 1903 illustration was printed exclusively for inclusion in a fine set of reference material published in 1903.Printed on medium-weight paper, the overall sheet size is just over 7" x 9.75", and the printed portion (including the text above and below) is 5" x 8.75" (the narrow printed border is 5" x 8", text excluded), with blank margins of 1/4" - 1" all the way around to allow easy matting and framing. The print is a true stone chromolithograph with the distinctive saturated color and depth. It is a very attractive work, with special attention to detail and accurate hue, and exceptionally well-printed.I've matted and framed several of these, and they look very nice. Please check my store for other similar botanical, natural history, or historical art prints perfect for framing or incorporating into other projects. A Note on Lithography: One of the delightful and interesting results of the engraving and ink transfer process in lithography is that there can be variants of the prints which look slightly different when compared side-by-side, even though they were produced by the same engraved plates on the same press. This may be a result of additional passes by one color or another, subtle differences in the ink tone, varying pressure from the pressing of the plates, slight variation in the position of each color plate, or other choices made by the engravers or the printers. The result is that each print's appearance is truly unique.Below is a cropped view of the sheet--without full margins. The image is a fairly accurate representation of the print. Below: Close-ups showing the intricate details and the lovely metallic gold ink. Condition: Very Good. As shown, with no tears or marks on the printed portion. There may be stray printer's ink, or minor spots of discoloration related to the aging process of the paper, especially in the margins of the sheet. This is a genuine 1903 stone chromolithograph print--NOT a recent reproduction. It is over 120 years old; please handle with care.Satisfaction Guaranteed or RETURN for any reason for a prompt refund.Comes from a smoke-free home. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
