Estate sale find. Very rare piece! Classic and original Cordova hand carved wood tree of life containing many bird and animal fetishes. By Benita Reino López of Cordova NM. (See below). Benita comes from a family of woodworkers known throughout northern New Mexico for their unique chip carved Santos, nativities, birds and trees of life. She was the first documented Santera (female carver of Saints). She passed away in 1977. The López artists are noted for their naturalistic, unpainted figures. Carved from dried aspen wood, which is plentiful in the mountains of New Mexico. Aspen, a soft, white wood, becomes honey-colored when it ages. Has an old handwritten label on the bottom "Benita Lopez Cordova NM $9.00" Very good condition with no damage. Measures 6.5" high. Base is 2.75" square. Overall 8 inches wide. Female carvers of Cordova: Although there is very little proof that women took part in the early creation of Saints, that changed in the early 1900s. Female carvers from Cordova, New Mexico that followed in the tradition of their elder family members began to emerge. These artists and others like them became known as “Santeras”, the female counterpart to the Santeros. The practice of making Saints is often passed down from family member to family member. This tradition has helped to introduce the artform, and the cultural significances that eventually resonated with many women.
