The Ultra-Verithin Watch, 1924 Gruen made their name on thin watches, but by 1920, many other companies were making regular production thin watches too. It made sense to try for something even thinner. Gruen introduced the Ultra-Verithin caliber in 1924. It is thinner than the regular VeriThin, but not by much, and the competition was not much thicker. Combine that with high sticker prices and a movement that looks value-engineered rather than premium, and you get a watch that did not really make a splash in the market. Sales were slow through the 1920s -- when it was positioned at the top of the Gruen lineup -- and then the Great Depression began. Most Ultra-Verithins were sold more cheaply during the 1930s, in gold-filled or stainless steel cases, and dials marked only "Gruen". The UV caliber was the first Gruen caliber to put cap jewels on the escape wheel and leave the center wheel running in a bushing in a 17 jewel watch. The practice would become standard on all of Gruen's new calibers for the next 30+ years, except automatic watches. Grade UV Jewel Count 17 Caliber UV Adjustment Adjusted Temp.
