FRANK CAPRA - CONTRACT SIGNED 08/22/1936 - HFSID 274963 THE FAMED DIRECTOR BEGINS ANOTHER TERM OF HIS CONTRACT WITH COLUMBIA PICTURES AFTER COMPLETING HIS ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING FILM, MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN FRANK CAPRA. Typed DS: "Frank Capra" under "Accepted & Agreed to", 1p, 8½x11. Hollywood, California, 1936 August 22. On letterhead of Columbia Pictures Corporation to Capra in Hollywood. In full: "We are addressing this letter to you in connection with the existing contract between us dated June 6, 1935. That certain letter agreement between us dated November 25, 1935, provides that the first period of the term of said contract shall commence upon the date designated by us, which date shall in no event be later than two (2) weeks after the completion of the photoplay then entitled OPERA HAT, which photoplay is now known and designated as MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN. In view of the fact that we have not heretofore designated another starting date, said first period would be deemed to have commenced upon February 19, 1936, which is two weeks after the completion of photography of said photoplay, upon which photography was actually completed on February 5, 1936. However, notwithstanding this provision, it is hereby mutually understood and agreed that said first period shall be deemed to have commenced upon the day following the completion of photography upon MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN, and accordingly February 6, 1936, is hereby established as the date upon which the aforesaid first term commenced. Your signature in the space indicated therefor below will serve to confirm the fact that said first term commenced on February 6, 1936, as aforesaid, and will constitute this a valid and binding agreement between us. Very truly yours". Also signed by a Studio Manager of Columbia Pictures Corporation. Capra, who was a major director for Columbia Pictures during the 1930s, won the second of his three Best Director Oscars for Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, which is mentioned in this document. Frank Capra (1897-1991), born Francesco Rosario Capra in Sicily, was the winner of three Best Director Academy Awards: It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and You Can't Take It With You (1938). He enjoyed total creative freedom on his sets and also directed, among other films, Lost Horizon (1937), Meet John Doe (1941) and It's A Wonderful Life (1946). Capra was the first Hollywood director to have his name precede a film's title. Lightly creased with folds, not at signatures. Staple holes and two file holes at upper margin, which has paper clip rust stain at left. Slightly soiled, faint pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right margin. Overall, fine condition.
