Description: I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the world. Hallo here! Whoop! Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Here we offer an absolutely gorgeous, matching, finely-bound set of early and first editions of Charles Dickens' classic Christmas books, beginning with perhaps the most wonderful novel ever written, A Christmas Carol In Prose (Being a Ghost Story of Christmas), and proceeding through The Cricket on the Hearth, A Fairy Tale of Home; The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In; The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain, a Fancy for Christmastime; and The Battle of Life, A Love Story. Each novel is of the original London publisher Dickens engaged and each includes all the original pages and illustrations, including Christmas Carol's 4 hand-colored plates. Christmas Carol is an 1845 stated 12th "edition" (a term that was then used the way "print run" would later be used) published by Chapman and Hall; Cricket is an 1846 stated 16th edition by Bradbury and Evans; Chimes is a stated 1845 10th edition, by Chapman and Hall; Haunted Man is an 1848 first edition by Bradbury and Evans; and Battle is an 1846 first edition by Bradbury and Evans. The set is finely-bound in 3/4 calfskin over marbled boards that are gilt-impressed and ribbed on the spine, with publishing date noted at the base, maroon placeholding ribbon, and gilt going all the way around the text blocks (to keep dust out), marbled endpages, and each book is signed by noted 19th-century London bookbinder, Root and Son. Each volume is in wonderful condition with leather that is still supple and exhibiting minimal edgewear (please see pics). They each look to be missing a pastedown name and author label on the spine. The placeholding ribbons are each long separated from the spine (or, if not, they will detach if you tug on them). Gilt is still very bright. Minor foxing within. Bindings are very tight and square, test and illustrations are very clean, bright, and crisp. Books measure approximately 6.5 x 4.25-inches; 166, 174, 175, 188, and 175 pages, respectively, plus Christmas Carol, Cricket, and Battle are followed by 2-pages of ads. Excellently preserved!
