Description: This is an exquisite and Fine Antique 19th c. Italian Old Master Marble Sculpture, by renowned late 19th century Florentine sculptor Eugenio Battiglia. This work depicts the subject of a girl reading and practicing her grammar. She has a delicate and sweet face and holds a pencil in her right hand. Inscribed: "E. Battiglia Firenze" on the verso. I believe this sculpture is alabaster, but it may be marble. I will leave it to the viewer to discern. There is an embossed metal plaque on the verso which reads: "Galeria Artistica Peru 134 SC. Reguan." From my research, I have discovered that Galeria Artistica was an elite and high-end art gallery and silver luxury goods carrier in Lima, Peru during the 1880's - 1890's. This work was likely exported from Italy to Peru during this time. This sculpture has an original mottled black marble base, which has loosened from the artwork and is now a separate piece. This sculpture likely dates from the 1890's - 1910's. Approximately 9 inches tall x 7 1/4 inches wide x 5 1/2 inches deep (including base.) Very good condition for age, with an honest warm orange patina in some areas from a century of age. There is one small crack at the top of the girl's pencil, which has been repaired long age (please see photos.) Battiglia's larger pieces have been known to sell for nearly $100K with Sotheby's in the past. Priced to sell. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer.
