Description: Up for auction is one no head stamp cup fire cartridge which I believe is a .42 caliber. From my research, the cup firing system bullets came in .28, .30 and .42 calibers. The OAL for these bullets is 1 and 1/8 inch which equates to the .42 caliber. In April 1855, gunmaker Rollin White sold his patented bored-through cylinder design to Smith and Wesson. To prevent paying royalties to Smith and Wesson, other gun manufacturers had to come with different designs. Gunmakers Willard Ellis and John White patented the front loading system in the 1850s. This system became known as the cup fire. It was basically a rimfire system, but the primming compound was placed in a hollow cup at the end of the cartridge case. The cartridge could be loaded from the front of the gun's cylinder. The cartridge was fired when the gun's hammer struck cup through a small hole in the cylinder. There is a lot of information on the cup firing system on the internet including pictures of the cup fire cartridges being loaded in the Merwin and Bray-Plant's Patent Cup fire army revolver cylinder.
