EMPEROR CLAUDIUS ANCIENT ROME PRINT STEEL ENGRAVING 1884 CAMEO MESSALINA FAMILY

Description: This is an 1884 Original STEEL ENGRAVING of THE EMPEROR CLAUDIUS AND FAMILY Claudius was born on 1 August 10 BC in Gaul (now France) into the Roman imperial family. Tiberius, the second emperor of Rome, was his uncle. Claudius suffered from physical disabilities, including a limp and a speech impediment and was therefore treated with disdain by his family, and not considered as a future emperor. When Tiberius's successor Caligula was assassinated in January 41 AD, the Praetorian Guard found Claudius in the palace and acclaimed him as emperor. The senate held out against Claudius for two days, but then accepted him.Overall Dimensions of sheet are approximately 13.5" x 10.5"  The center image measures approx. 4.5" x 5.75".  There is titling below. In Very Good Used Condition, vibrant crisp lines, no chips or tears, there may be some faint creasing, age spots, etc., see photos for condition - these are of the actual print you will receive.  Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image is excellent and the sheet is very good.Original Steel Engraving by the French engraver Paul Rodolphe Joseph Dujardin for Gebbie & Co., Philadelphia, 1884 edition of THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF ROME.Steel engraved plates produced much sharper and more distinct lines than the copper plates they replaced.
