Description: American author and speaker ELIZABETH "LIBBIE" BACON CUSTER, wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, scarce and highly desirable signed paperback book from her personal library, Personal Experiences on the Oregon Trail Sixty Years Ago. Libbie signs in pencil across the first page at the top as "Elizabeth B. Custer". The Oregon Trail topic was of critical interest to Custer's widow as the first reservation treaty between the Lakota and the United States was signed in 1851 when Europeans on the Oregon Trail started to cross the southern part of Lakota lands in large numbers. There were several clashes between settlers and Lakotas after that, but the biggest and the most famous conflict happened in 1876 when her husband along with several hundred U.S. soldiers were killed by Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho forces at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. As was customary at the time, Elizabeth Custer had a personal assistant / companion / live-in housekeeper named Margaret Flood. Margaret and Elizabeth were extremely close, and Margaret lived with Libbie. Eventually, Margaret married and her husband Patrick moved in with them until Libbie's death at the age of 91 in 1931. SIGNATURIST-INK has acquired several key historic original pieces emanating directly from Elizabeth Custer via Margaret Flood's estate, including a rare copy of Libbie's Last Will, and among Custer's final military promotion to Brevet Major General, along with several other signed items. Left nearly destitute in the aftermath of her husband's death at the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn, Libbie became an outspoken advocate for Custer's legacy through her popular books and lectures. Largely as a result of her decades of campaigning on his behalf, General Custer's image as the gallant fallen hero amid the glory of "Custer's Last Stand" stood for almost a century after his death.
