Samuel Houston, who lived from 1793 –1863, was an American general and statesman who played an important role in the Texas Revolution. Houston was handsome, fair and tall, with wavy chestnut hair, friendly blue eyes, broad shoulders, and a thick hairy chest. As a young man, he had killed a man in a duel and he enjoyed his whisky; he liked a good time and admitted that as a young man that he was "wild and impetuous." He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of TENNESSEE and the seventh governor of TEXAS, the only individual to be elected governor of two different states in the United States. Born in Virginia his family migrated to Tennessee, when Houston was a teenager. Houston later ran away from home and spent about three years living with the Cherokee, becoming known as Raven. He served under General ANDREW JACKSON in the War of 1812, and after the war, he presided over the removal of many Cherokee from Tennessee. Houston won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1823. In 1829, after divorcing his first wife, Houston resigned from office, and moved to Arkansas Territory. Houston settled in Texas in 1832. He led the Texan Army to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle in Texas's war for independence against Mexico. Houston refused to talk about his divorce from his first wife. If Houston had his eye on the White House, he was no doubt compromised by his personal transgressions with women and alcohol. In addition, his views on slavery put him in conflict with the country's southern states. Although he was an enslaved person owner himself, Houston was opposed to the expansion of slavery in the new territories. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Houston, who'd been elected governor of Texas in 1859, refused to pledge his allegiance to the Confederate States of America. An infuriated Texas legislature discharged him of his duties. Houston won election in the 1836 Texas presidential election. In 1840, Houston married his third wife, MARGARET LEE, an Alabama lady he said was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Margaret was a devout Baptist and helped to convert Sam to her religion in 1854. They became parents to eight children. Houston played a key role in the annexation of Texas in 1845, and in 1846, he was elected to represent Texas in the United States Senate. Houston's Senate record was marked by his unionism and opposition to extremists from both the North and South. In 1859, Houston won election as the governor of Texas. In this role, he opposed secession and unsuccessfully sought to keep Texas out of the Confederate States of America. He enjoyed an enormously successful political career and made crucial contributions to the growth of the U.S. He was open, frank, and honest to a fault."
