Description: Please read the entire description and inspect all the photographs before buying this item. This listing is for a US Navy Bureau Ships Mark II sextant produced during WWII by the Pioneer Instrument Division of Bendix Aviation. The serial number of the sextant is 1873-1940. The serial number on the identifying plaque on the box is 2125-1940. The following items are included:1. The sextant with its telescope.2. Yankee #95 and Yankee #2590 screwdrivers.3. Two spare mirrors. 4. Mahogany plywood box with all hardware except the key to the lock. Note that the serial numbers don't match but they are from the same year.5. A 30+ page manual covering maintenance and overhaul specific to the USN Mark II sextant. (See sample page in the photos.) As far as I can tell the only missing items are the knurled adjusting tool and the key to the lock. The sextant and telescope both show wear and significant loss of the black anodized finish and worn off paint on the bronze components. However, there is no obvious damage. I suspect the sextant has been serviced or refurbished at some point, both because of its age as well as the fact that I noticed two different styles of screws holding the stiffening rib to the arm. There may have been other parts replaced but other than the blue filter (noted below) I didn't see anything else. The sextant arm and its micrometer mechanism operate smoothly and the arm moves throughout its range without binding. The installed mirrors are in acceptable condition, although there is some discoloration of silvering on the larger mirror and a chip in the corner of the half-silvered mirror. (There are spares for both mirrors but they are in poor condition.) The seven colored filters are complete and undamaged. The blue filter is a replacement and it is slightly thicker than the others. The telescope optics are mostly clear and the focusing ring rotates smoothly. There are some small black spots visible when looking through the telescope, which may be dust on the interior lenses The box shows its age with significant wear on the edges and corners, as well as a few patches to the veneer. There are scratches, dings, and some discoloration to the bottom of the box. Not a perfect specimen but there must be lots of history in this one - if only it could talk! Shipping charges are actual costs based on weight and size. The sextant will be VERY carefully packed. Local pickup available with no shipping cost. I've tried to be complete and to disclose all problems, but I may have missed something. Please check out all the pictures and do not hesitate to ask about anything.
