Description: This is a signed letter by Dr. Sydney Ringer(1835-1910), a notable British physiologist and pharmacologist, who is best known for inventingRinger's solution. During his academic career, Ringer becamea Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in1870, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1885. At University College Hospital he served first asProfessor of Materia Medica (from 1862 to 1878),then as Professor of the Principles & Practice of Medicine (from 1878 to 1887), and later as theHolme Professor of Clinical Medicine (from 1887to 1900). His most celebrated work in research was doneat University College's incipient Department ofPhysiology. He established the minimal ioniccomposition (simple chloride salts of sodium, potassium and calcium) of a physiological saline. His demonstration of the necessity for extracellularcalcium to sustain cardiac muscle contractionin the spontaneously beating frog heart was thefirst to reveal the physiological importance ofcalcium subsequently discovered for many cellularprocesses. This work provided the basis ofRinger's solution of which there followed manyderivatives, modified to suit different species andexperimental conditions. The letter is addressed to " My dear Roth ". I believe that this letter was addressed to Dr. Matthias Roth. This letter was originally part of a groupof letters from the same general period of time that were sent to members of a family named Roth. One of those memberswas Dr. Matthias Roth. He was the father of a notable homeopathic physician named Bernard Roth. Together, the father and sonhad a medical practice, first at 48 WimpoleStreet, and later at 38 Harley Street. The letter is handwritten in ink on a folded sheet of paper, with Sydney Ringer's address written at the top (15 Cavendish Place, Cavendish Sq.). The letter was not originally dated. However, there is some writing in pencilat the top (most likely written by Dr. Roth)that gives the date June 1872. Beneath the date he added "I was suffering from?????? ?????" (unfortunately, I cannot make out the last two pencilled words). The letter consists mainly of medical advice, and begins as follows: My dear Roth, I am extremelysorry to hear your bad account of your health.I am really afraidnothing can avert an abcess. Continue the??? formulations & applypoultices. Also rubover the swelling equal parts of........ Unfolded, the letter is about 7" by 9". It is in good condition, with moderate wear.
